Miami, Florida – September 15, 2015 – Cuban Democratic Directorate.  The Cuban Democratic Directorate strongly condemns the arrest of the Cuban civic leader Jorge Luis Garcia Perez "Antúnez", on his return to Cuba on Monday, September 14.

Jorge Luis Garcia Perez "Antúnez" is a human rights and democracy activist in Cuba.

The Directorate also condemns the arrest of his wife, Yris Tamara Pérez Aguilera, activist for Movimiento por los Derechos Civiles Rosa Parks (Civil Rights Movement Rosa Parks), as well as Ciro Alexis Casanova and Ivan Fernandez Depestre, members along with Antúnez of Frente Nacional de Resistencia Cívica Orlando Zapata Tamayo (National Front of Civic Resistance Orlando Zapata Tamayo).

The arrest of Antúnez and other activists across the island is in response to the desire of the Castro regime to impose a curtain of silence on the Cuban population before the upcoming papal visit.

The Cuban Democratic Directorate calls on the Vatican to denounce the repression organized by the Castro regime and implores the cancellation of the papal visit in response to the continued repression of Cuban activists. The American government of the United States, with whom the Vatican worked to achieve the current rapprochement with the Castro regime, should also suspend diplomatic contacts as long as this repression exists.

“The Directorate launched an international campaign for the cancellation of the Pope’s visit to the repressive state as instigated by the regime that exists in Cuba," said Dr. Orlando Gutiérrez Boronat, National Secretary of the Cuban Democratic Directorate.
